Navas PhotographyI have always been obsessed with photos. While growing up in Mexico City, I watched as my British father photographed flower after flower (and sat through his slideshows of said photographs, which were punctuated with photos of my sister, mother and me standing stiffly in front of pyramids and on beaches). In college, I studied languages and graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in French, and from American University with a MA in International Affairs. During an internship with the US Department of State I was able to travel to Haiti to monitor the 1994 Presidential elections, but I was more interested in the colors and the emotions I could capture with my lens, than with the political intricacies of the emerging democracy. However, it wasn't until my daughter was born that I came to terms with my obsession as I became the local photo lab's top client, and my friends and acquaintances started paying me to photograph their own children.

I am mostly self-taught. My favorite subjects are children and weddings. Children are natural and unedited; weddings offer me the opportunity to photograph an entire story, filled with raw emotion. The flowers that my father photographed are most interesting to me if there is a child's finger delicately touching the petal; a landscape is to me most worthy of photographing if a person is part of the picture. I seek to capture what I believe to be the meaningful moments during interactions among people and between people and their environment. My style reflects my personality: casual, creative, unscripted, humorous, boundless.

When I am not observing the world through my lens, I am most likely either caring for my two children, training for triathlons, or working on my at-risk teens project, 100 STARs...and Counting.
